5 Questions to Ask Before Switching to an Independent Agent
Most people who've only ever bought insurance directly from a carrier have never really thought about what an independent agent actually does differently. We put the common hesitations to Brannon East directly, one at a time.
1. How do independent agents actually make money, if not by charging clients more?
Commission, paid by the carrier, built into the cost of doing business for them either way. If you buy direct or you buy through me, the carrier is paying somebody to originate that policy, either their own call center staff or an agent like me. Your premium doesn't change based on which one it is.
2. Is going through an agent slower than just buying online?
Sometimes by a day, honestly. If you want a policy bound in the next ten minutes at 11pm, an online direct carrier can do that and I can't compete with that speed. What I can do is get you actual comparisons across 20-plus carriers instead of one company's number, which for most people is worth a short wait.
3. What happens if I have a claim? Do I deal with the agent or the insurance company?
Both, really. The carrier handles and pays the claim, that part doesn't change. But you've got me to call if something's stuck, if you're not sure what's covered, or if you just want someone who already knows your policy to explain what's happening in plain English instead of reading you a script.
4. Can I switch to an independent agent even if I already have a policy somewhere else?
Yes, and it's a lot more common than people think. Most of my clients already had insurance somewhere when they called me. I'll look at what you've got, shop it against other carriers, and if nothing beats your current rate, I'll tell you that too. No point moving you for the sake of moving you.
5. What if I don't like working with an agent? Am I locked in somehow?
No. You're never locked into working with me specifically, the policy is yours. If you wanted to go direct with the carrier later or move to another agent, that's entirely your call. I'd just rather earn the chance to keep working with you by actually being useful when you need something.
If you're on the fence, the easiest way to find out what it actually looks like is to just get a real quote and see the comparison for yourself. Start here and Brannon will shop 20+ carriers at no extra cost.
